Profile

Revd Dr Ericcson T. Mapfumo is a missional priest in Charge of Christ Church Moldgreen and St James Rawthorpe and Anglican Chaplain at the University of Huddersfield. He holds several vocational and academic qualifications, including master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Theology, Ministry and Missions from Durham University. With a doctorate specialising in Black clergy, his research is an essential focal point for intercultural ministerial relationships within the church.  Ericcson also has other qualifications in Building Physics and Construction.  Prior to ministry, he also had a background in Building Physics and was a work-based assessor, internal verifier and tutor in the built environment. He trained at St Mary’s and St Paul’s Churches in Barnsley and worked as a community facilitator, project coordinator, and lay chaplain at Barnsley College. In addition, he has experience in chaplaincies in the university, school, prison, and health sectors. His teaching qualifications and extensive background in education, especially in the Built Environment field, have enabled him to develop strong pedagogical expertise. He has significant experience teaching Theology, Religion, and Philosophy, respectively, at the Leeds School of Ministry, Barnsley College and Kingdom School of Theology.  As a Shona from Zimbabwe, Ericcson was raised in an Indigenous African Pentecostal Church known as Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa (ZAOGA), where he worshipped for over 20 years. He attended several African Diaspora and European Pentecostal-based churches in the UK before joining a charismatic evangelical Anglican Church in Barnsley (St Georges), which broadened his perspectives on Pentecostalism. As a post-colonial scholar with an interest in African and Liberation theology, he is particularly interested in reaching out to the community using cultural anthropology. As a former street pastor, he has developed his ministry portfolio alongside his current role as a priest. He is also a voluntary community organiser, working with agencies such as Citizens UK.  His co-authored publications with Dr Paul Mocombe and Dr Carol Tomlin focus on cultural and sociological forms of African diasporic communities in the UK and USA. Ericcson’s book Black Clergy in the Church of England: Towards a Sense of Belonging is one of his key publications. His hobbies and interests include playing and coaching chess, travelling, cooking, listening to blues music, and reading about sub-Saharan Africa. Ericcson enjoys interacting with people and spending time with his wife and two daughters.
